Dr. Sheila Schwartz, Professor Emeritus, SUNY, New Paltz, has published sixteen books, including the mainstream novels, The Solid Gold Circle (Crown/Dell paperback), Sorority (Warner Books), The Little Terrorist (Xlibris), and the Young Adult books Growing Up Guilty (Pantheon) and Like Mother, Like Me (Pantheon/Bantam paperback), the last of which was made into a TV film with Linda Lavin and Kristy McNichol. Her Young Adult novels have been published in many languages and Dr. Schwartz has gone on books tours to such countries as Hungary, Ireland, Czechoslovakia and Austria.
Dr. Schwartz's writing and teaching encompass a variety of categories, including novels, short stories, nonfiction, academic, and children's books. She has published over a hundred articles and book reviews, which have appeared in The New York Times Sunday Book Review, The New York Times Op-Ed Page, The Nation, and Psychology Today, among other publications.
She also wrote and produced a documentary film about one aspect of the Holocaust in France, The Children of Izieu, which has won a number of awards. The film is available from Brandeis University's Film Center.
Dr. Schwartz has taught writing at every age level, to such diverse populations as prisoners in correctional institutions, retirees at Elderhostels, women's groups, elementary and secondary school students, and to college students on both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Two months a year, Dr. Schwartz teaches autobiographical writing at Rio Caliente, in Mexico and in 2003, she will be teaching Writing Courses on the University of Pittsburgh's Semester at Sea.
She is perceived as a compassionate and inspirational teacher and has seen her students grow in self-esteem and productivity, as well as in the writing skills that lead to publication. She shares with her students her joy in life, language, self-expression and competence. She has worked with many individuals, helping them to edit their books for publication.
Dr. Schwartz has received many awards including The New York State/UUP Medal for all-around Excellence, the New York State English Council Awards for Writing and Teaching, and the Fellows Award of the Association for Adolescent Literature (ALAN). She also received a Fulbright Award for teaching and research in Ireland. She is a long-standing member of the Author's Guild, PEN, and the National Writers' Union.
